8 Dead, Others Injured As Herdsmen Attack Southern Kaduna

Armed herdsmen have killed eight persons in the troubled southern Kaduna area of Kaduna State. This was confirmed by a Nigerian security operative stationed in the area.

The source said the gunmen stormed Addu village in Kaura local government in the early hours of today and carried out a surprise and gruesome attack.

He also said, the location of the attack was near the new Jos-Manchok expressway, adding that news of the attack had created panic and heavy traffic in the area.

"Security agents are now in the village and the eight corpses have been assembled before us. Those injured have been rushed to hospital by officials of the local government.”

It was gathered that Addu village is mostly inhabited by members of the Attakar ethnic group who are found in Kaura local government of Kaduna State as well as Riyom in neighboring Plateau State. There have been sporadic waves of violence between members of the community and herdsmen.

Six Killed In Fresh Violence In Plateau

The Plateau State Government has condemned Sunday night’s killing of six members of two families in their homes at Kungte village in Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

Commissioner for Information and Communication, Yiljap Abraham said in a statement Monday that the attack on innocent people mostly women and children at a time peace had virtually returned to the state was a cowardly act.

Unknown gunmen attacked the village at about 8pm on Sunday gunning down six people in two compounds. The gunmen said to have been armed with sophisticated weapons, reportedly shot sporadically into the compounds.

The statement by the commissioner read: “The Plateau State Government has received reports of attacks on some communities in the state with great indignation. The unprovoked killing of six members of two families in their home in Kungte village, Kanadap (near Marraraban Jama’a) in Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area by gunmen on Sunday September 1, 2013, is an evil and wicked act that should be condemned by all members of society.

“It is also a display of cowardice by the perpetrators who under the cover of darkness deliberately chose to visit violence on vulnerable members of society – women and children -to achieve clearly devilish designs. Such an attack, coming at a time when the state has been mostly peaceful for quite sometime appears a desperate attempt to reverse the gains of our hard-earned efforts in breaking down the barriers of ethnic and religious intolerance and thereby rebuilding the bridges of communal consensus.”

It added that security has been beefed up in the affected areas to check any further breach of the peace.

Taliban bombers attack US base in Afghanistan

Nato supply vehicles were set ablaze in the attack, blocking the supply route from Pakistan

Taliban militants have attacked a US base in eastern Afghanistan, sparking a lengthy gun battle in which three insurgents were killed.

Reports say the attack on Torkham base in Nangarhar province unfolded after militants torched Nato supply trucks on the highway leading to the base.

Officials said that no Afghan or US soldiers died in the raid. The attackers did not enter the base.

But officials say the financial cost of the attack is likely to be immense.

Many Nato supply vehicles on the road to the base were left badly burned on the highway. Officials closed the Jalalabad-Torkham road - a key route for these vehicles - after the attack.

A Taliban spokesman told the BBC that the group was behind the raid.

Isaf said the attack was unsuccessful: "Our initial assessment of this morning's events, which occurred in the vicinity of a forward operating base located in Nangarhar province, is that it was an attempted but unsuccessful co-ordinated attack by enemy forces."

The base is home to some of the 66,000 US troops serving in Afghanistan along with forces from other countries. Officials say the base was also an important stopping point for Nato vehicles.

There has recently been a spate of attacks across the country, claiming dozens of lives - most of them civilians.

The violence is being interpreted by some as an attempt by the Taliban to assert their presence and test the strength of Afghan forces ahead of the planned withdrawal of US-led forces at the end of next year, the BBC's Karen Allen in Kabul reports.

PHOTOS: Suspected Spy Bird Detained By Egyptian Authorities

In a case that ruffled feathers in Egypt, authorities have detained a migratory bird that a citizen suspected of being a spy.

A man in Egypt's Qena governorate, some 450 kilometers southeast of Cairo, found the suspicious bird among four others near his home and brought them to a police station Friday, said Mohammed Kamal, the head of the security in the region.

There, officers and the man puzzled over the electronic device attached to the suspected winged infiltrator.

On Saturday, a veterinary committee called by concerned government officials determined the device was neither a bomb nor a spying device.

Instead, they discovered it was a wildlife tracker used by French scientists to follow the movement of migrating birds, said Ayman Abdallah, the head of Qena veterinary services.

Abdallah said the device stopped working when the bird crossed the French border, absolving it of being an avian Mata Hari.

With turmoil gripping Egypt following the July 3 popularly backed military coup that overthrew the country's president, authorities and citizens remain highly suspicious of anything foreign.

Conspiracy theories easily find their ways into cafe discussion - as well as some media in the country.

Earlier this year, a security guard filed a police report after capturing a pigeon he said carried microfilm. A previous rumor in 2010 blamed a series of shark attacks along Egypt's Mediterranean coast on an Israeli plot. It wasn't.

In the bird's case, even military officials ultimately had to deny the bird carried any spying devices. They spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists.

Yet later, the state-run daily newspaper Al-Ahram quoted Kamal as saying the incident showed the patriotism of the man who captured the bird in the first place.

The bird remains caged for now, as Abdallah said authorities must receive permission from prosecutors to release the animal.

But one mystery still remains: Abdallah and others called the bird a swan. Photographs obtained by The Associated Press showed what appeared to be a stork locked behind bars in the police station.

Adam Lanza Shot Himself As 1st Responders Closed In, Gov. Dannel Malloy Says

The gunman in the Connecticut shooting rampage committed suicide as first responders closed in, the governor said Sunday, raising the specter that Adam Lanza had planned an even more gruesome massacre and was stopped short.

Lanza blasted his way into the building and used a high-power rifle to kill 20 children and 6 adults, including the principal who tried to stop him, authorities said.

As President Barack Obama prepared a visit and churches opened their doors to comfort a grieving town Sunday, federal agents fanned out to dozens of gun stores and shooting ranges across Connecticut, chasing leads they hoped would cast light on Lanza's life.

Among the questions: Why did his mother, a well-to-do suburban divorcee, keep a cache of high-power weapons in the house? What experience did Lanza have with those guns? And, above all, what set him on a path to go classroom-by-classroom, massacring 6- and 7-year-olds?

27 people dead including 20 children after 'student's father' opened fire at Connecticut elementary school

At least 27 people are dead - including more than a dozen children - after a gunman who is believed to be a student's father opened fire today at an elementary school in Connecticut.
Police were dispatched to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown after they received reports of shots being fired by a gunman in the main office of the school at 9.41am.

There are preliminary reports a student's father, who is believed to be 20-years-old and from New Jersey, was the shooter. He was killed at the scene though it is unclear if he shot himself or was brought down by an officer.
Earlier reports of a second shooter are still unconfirmed.
Terrified parents rushed to the school desperately trying to reach their children as hundreds of officers swarmed over the school.
The shooting is the latest in a series of high-profile gun crimes in American schools and colleges, that is especially shocking given the age of the students involved.

Speaking with MSNBC, one mother said she had heard the principal had been shot dead.
'The principal was killed and some other people were shot,' the unidentified woman said outside the school.
Her daughter added: 'Miss Martin closed the door and we went into the corner', before the gunman let out 'lots of shots'.
Dawn Hochsprung, 47, has been the principal at Sandy Hook Elementary school since July 2010.
